Is it healthy to commute to you place of work?

Spending a long time on the subway is extremely boring, we can all agree on that. Even if you have a book or entertainment, the rides tends to drag on and make us look at the station map repeatedly. However, now it was just found that these long commutes can also affect your overall health and your important cognitive functions such as focus and can even lead to depression, which among other things can be an important influence on your work performance and well being.

  • A new study in the UK has just tackled the issue. Researchers at the University of Cambridge gathered data from over 30 thousand british workers. It was found that people who commute for less than a half an hour were seven times more productive than those who take more than an hour to reach their workplaces.
  • It was also found that the latter category had a 33 percent higher probability of being diagnosed with clinical depression. And it doesn’t stop there. Long commuters also have a 40 percent higher chance of experiencing financial trouble and anxiety and 12 percent more likely to be affected by stress at the workplace. They also seem unable to get the required amount of sleep hours every night and have a 21 percent probability of becoming obese than those with short commutes.
  • In the age of telecommuting, this study can present a very useful insight to employers worldwide about paying attention to their employers living arrangements and locations. Flexibility and convenience in this case will translate into a more productive working environment and more enthusiastic employees.
